Accessibility

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the standard referenced by UK and EU accessibility law and regulation. Accessibility is considered when we design and build new features, not added afterwards.

This Site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 AA. "Partially conformant" means some parts do not yet fully meet the standard, most of them in areas still being built (the archive migration and the Inner Circle video library, in particular). This statement is based on our own review of the codebase and manual testing, not an external audit.

• A “Skip to content” link for keyboard users, ahead of the header on every page.
• A colour palette checked for contrast: body text, headings and links meet or exceed WCAG AA contrast ratios against every background colour we use.
• Visible keyboard focus outlines throughout, and full support for “prefers-reduced-motion”, which turns off scroll animation for anyone who has asked their system for it.
• Semantic landmarks and labelled navigation regions (header, main, footer), with the current page marked for assistive technology.
• Forms with properly associated labels, not placeholder text alone.
• Alt text on Archive images, including a labelled placeholder state for entries whose image has not yet been digitised.
• Keyboard-operable interactive controls (the Archive’s list/timeline/map view switch, the mobile menu, the newsletter prompt and the cookie banner) with focus trapped correctly inside open menus and dialogs, and returned to where you were when you close them.

• Archive material: some scanned documents, letters and photographs carry only a brief alt description, reflecting the surviving historical record rather than a full account of the image. We improve these over time as we learn more about each item.
• Archive map view: the map is a supplementary way to browse and is not fully accessible to screen reader and keyboard-only users; the list/grid view, which is the default, contains the same entries and is fully accessible.
• Video and audio in the Inner Circle library: we are adding captions and transcripts as modules are recorded and published; older recordings may be retrofitted over time rather than all at once.
• Third-party services embedded in the Site, including Discord, PayPal, Stripe, Mux/Vimeo’s video player, and Google/Meta scripts, are built and maintained by those providers, and their accessibility is governed by their own conformance, not ours.

The Site is built to work with current versions of major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on desktop and mobile, and with the screen readers and assistive technology that pair with them. Core content and forms are readable and usable without JavaScript; some enhancements (scroll animation, the Archive’s live filtering) require it.

If you find a barrier using the Site, or content that is not accessible to you, tell us at info@alexandrianwitchcraft.org. Please include the page you were on, what assistive technology or browser you were using, and what happened. We aim to respond within five working days, and to agree a reasonable way to get you the information or service you need in the meantime.

We want the chance to put things right directly, so please contact us first. If you are in the UK and remain unhappy with our response, you can raise a service accessibility complaint with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (equalityhumanrights.com). If you are in the EU/EEA, you can raise it with your national consumer protection or equality body.

This statement was last reviewed and updated on 1 July 2026, alongside a self-assessment of the live site. We review it again whenever we ship a significant new feature, such as the archive migration or the Inner Circle video library, and at least once a year.
