Bexhill Druids of the Ancient Order of Druids, lodge 657, c.1938

Photograph, about 1938. Three men stand at a wooden lodge pedestal in a curtained room, each wearing a collar of office hung with jewels and medals. Two lit candles in tall brass sticks stand on the pedestal, whose front carries a triangular emblem and the letters A.O.D. with the number 657. A tall crook headed staff rests against the pedestal at the left. The lodge belonged to the Ancient Order of Druids, one of the fraternal and friendly societies that provided mutual help before state benefits. Their working used swords and took the oak as an emblem of the Deity, and the order kept its own chaplain. Bexhill Museum item 026. Bexhill Museum collection.
