Sanders:
‘King Of Witches’
“KING OF THE WITCHES,” by June Johns: Coward - McCann, Inc., New York, 1970, $5.
The word “witch” has been traditionally feminine. But the head of 107 British covens and undoubtedly the most powerful witch in all Europe is Alex Sanders, who was inducted into the cult at the age of seven by his grandmother.
As a white witch - he originally tried black witchcraft with tragic results - Sanders has been a major interpreter for this strange cult - religion in the current rebirth of interest in things occult.
In telling the story of Sanders’ life and work in “King of the Witches,” the author, Englishwoman June Johns, a reporter and writer, has stressed the whys and… wherefores of witchcraft, discussing the rituals, customs, history, and powers of witches. For perhaps the first time, the personal and human aspects of the cult are explored, making witchcraft seem much less sinister and far more benevolent.
“King of the Witches” is illustrated with photographs by Jack Smith, Miss Johns’ husband.
