'Personal Service' advertisement with a witch on a broomstick, Bexhill Observer, 25 February 1950

Bexhill Observer, 25 February 1950. A boxed display advertisement for Personal Service of Devonshire Square, telephones 3000 on two lines. Three starred lines offer electric chimney cleaning, house cleaning and gardening, and a staff bureau. At the left a small silhouette shows a witch in a pointed hat riding a broomstick. The drawing is a play on brooms and sweeping rather than a claim about witchcraft, and it ran in the paper without remark. Advertisements of this kind belong to the period before the Satanic panic of the 1980s, when such figures were used lightly in the local press. Bexhill Museum item 032.
