The cauldron of incense at the centre of the circle, Chantry Cottage, 2 July 1974

Photograph, 2 July 1974. The small ribbed iron cauldron that stood at the centre of the magic circle in the temple at Chantry Cottage, seen from above on the brick floor. It is filled with glowing charcoal and lumps of incense, and eight plaited cords are drawn across and around it and knotted at the rim, their tasselled ends trailing away over the bricks. A single white cord lies among them. Behind the cauldron stand the bare feet of a woman in a long pale robe with a braided hem, another cord hanging at her side.
