About this item

Photograph, 17 July 1982. A hand wearing a signet ring engraved with a pentagram rests on the trunk of a young tree, beside a circled letter 'A' and an inverted cross cut into the bark. Taken for the Bexhill Observer's front-page report of 17 July 1982, 'Satanic witches in Sidley woods rituals?', item 149, which described these marks as evidence, in Alex Sanders' view, of a group attempting to evoke a demon; Alan Chappell told the paper two weeks later that they were ordinary anarchist symbols. The museum lists the print as 'Photo 17.7.1982 Sidley Wood', numbered 25. Whose hand it is is not stated in any source. Bexhill Museum item 150. Print from the Bexhill Observer photographic archive at Bexhill Museum. Shown in UNSEEN: The Alex Sanders Archive at Bexhill Museum, Part Two, What the Town Did With It (26 August 2026), presented by Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum and hosted by Sharon Day for Alexandrian Witchcraft.
