Photograph, 11 June 1974. Alex Sanders, in an embroidered dark shirt, leans forward to cut an iced cake on a small table in a room at the Bell Hotel, a cigarette in his other hand. The cake is decorated with a dark eight petalled wheel and a monogram at its centre. Around him seven people raise glasses, Betty Britton at his right shoulder in a red gown with silver braid, a young woman in black lace at his left, and three younger men behind. Beer mats and a lighter lie on the table. The occasion was his leaving party before a stay in America, and the cards written that month say he expected to be gone two years. Bexhill Museum item 065.
