About this item

Photograph, 23 April 1975. Photographic print from the Bexhill Observer's coverage of the ceremony reported on 26 April 1975. Alex Sanders, in a short striped robe, bends over a coven member lying on the floor beside the altar, his hand across her forehead. On the altar are candles, an open book, a dagger and the draped mannequin head. The museum lists the print as 'Hypnotised witches'. The paper's printed caption for this stage of the ceremony reads 'the girl, hypnotised, on the floor with the other witches', and its report says Sanders left the temple soon after this picture was taken. The wristwatch of a seated onlooker is visible at the lower right. Byline: Jimmy Burke. Bexhill Museum item 100. Print from the Bexhill Observer photographic archive at Bexhill Museum. Shown in UNSEEN: The Alex Sanders Archive at Bexhill Museum, Part Two, What the Town Did With It (26 August 2026), presented by Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum and hosted by Sharon Day for Alexandrian Witchcraft.
