About this item
Photograph, 23 April 1975. Head and shoulders portrait of John Upton, in glasses and a polo neck, one of the Bexhill Observer prints from the evening of the ceremony reported on 26 April 1975. The paper described him as a 20 year old chef from Kent who had read about Alex Sanders and was one of six people waiting to be initiated; he had spent the previous weekend with the coven. He told the paper: 'This is a religion to me.' The print is numbered 15 on the museum's list and was published with the caption 'Pictured above is John Upton'.
Byline: Jimmy Burke.

Shown in UNSEEN: The Alex Sanders Archive at Bexhill Museum, Part Two, What the Town Did With It (26 August 2026), presented by Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum and hosted by Sharon Day for Alexandrian Witchcraft.
