About this item

Photograph, 27 October 1977. Alex Sanders, in a pale robe with embroidered cuffs, reads from a ring binder of handwritten pages resting on a wrought-iron stand in the temple at Chantry Cottage. A feathered mask or headdress hangs above the book and a small devotional print is pinned to the wall at the left. The museum lists the print as 'Alex Sanders with his book of shadows', numbered 17. Taken at the Hallowe'en preview reported by the Bexhill Observer on 29 October 1977, where it was published with the caption that Sanders 'checks the Hallowe'en ritual before Wednesday evening's run-through'. The binder is the one seen in the 1974 photographs. Byline: Jimmy Burke. Bexhill Museum item 134. Print from the Bexhill Observer photographic archive at Bexhill Museum. Shown in UNSEEN: The Alex Sanders Archive at Bexhill Museum, Part Two, What the Town Did With It (26 August 2026), presented by Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum and hosted by Sharon Day for Alexandrian Witchcraft.
