About this item

Photograph, 27 October 1977. Alex Sanders, in a pale robe, holds a dagger point down above a cut-glass goblet at the altar in the temple at Chantry Cottage, watched closely by Alan Barnett. The altar, a carved dark chest, carries candelabra thick with wax, a large egg mounted in a metal stand, dishes and a statue of a robed figure; the walls behind are hung with foil and foliage. Taken at the Hallowe'en preview reported by the Bexhill Observer on 29 October 1977, where it was published with the caption that Sanders 'is watched by Alan Barnett as a dagger is dipped into a chalice'. The same picture was reused by the paper in December 1978 or 1979, item 138. Byline: Jimmy Burke. Bexhill Museum item 135. Print from the Bexhill Observer photographic archive at Bexhill Museum. Shown in UNSEEN: The Alex Sanders Archive at Bexhill Museum, Part Two, What the Town Did With It (26 August 2026), presented by Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum and hosted by Sharon Day for Alexandrian Witchcraft.
