'Pupils in row over witch visits', Bexhill Observer, 10 July 1982

Bexhill Observer, 10 July 1982. John Dowling reports that Ancaster House School had expelled two sixteen-year-old pupils and suspended two others the previous term for visiting Alex Sanders' cottage in the High Street, Old Town, against school orders. Sanders told the paper that the visits continued, that he had first turned the girls away because no woman was in the house and later admitted them only when 'the lady of the house' was present, and that they had come to him for advice. The headmistress, Mrs Sheila Grattidge, said the matter had been fully investigated at the time, the police informed and the governors' backing obtained; she called the claim that visits continued 'an unsubstantiated statement' and declined further comment out of fairness to the girls.
