Bexhill Observer, 19 May 1988. Centre-page report by Deborah Scott-Bromley, pictures by Jimmy Burke and Richard Barlow, headed 'No need for a new king of the witches', on Alex Sanders' funeral at Hastings Crematorium the previous week and the question of his succession. The funeral was conducted by High Priestess Aislann Lester, with prayers, a reading from Proverbs and, to a zither, the anointing and censing of the coffin; Kevin Carlyon told the paper some witches were angry that parts of the Christian service were used. Derek Taylor supported Victor's succession; Maxine Sanders told the paper her son was a Christian and not involved, and issued a statement that a meeting of elders on 12 May had carried a motion that 'there was no need for a King of the Witches'. The tone is unsympathetic and the piece closes: 'So ends the Old Town's links with witchcraft.' Photographs of Victor, of Maxine Sanders, and of a card on a floral tribute and mourners.
