6952 Holiest of the Holy, perpetual comfort of mankind, you whose bountiful grace nourishes the whole world; whose heart turns towards all those in sorrow and tribulation as a mother's to her children; you who take no rest by night, no rest by day, but are always at hand to succour the distressed by land and sea, dispersing the gales that beat upon them: your hand alone can disentangle the hopelessly knotted skeins of fate, terminate every spell of bad weather and restrain the stars from harmful conjunction: the Gods above adore you, the gods below do homage to you, you set the orbs of Heaven spinning around the poles, you give light to the sun, you govern the universe, you trample down the… powers of Hell. At your voice the stars mover, the seasons recur, the spirits of earth rejoice, the elements obey. At your nod the winds blow, clouds drop wholesome rain upon the earth, seeds quicken, buds swell. Birds that fly through the air, beasts that prowl on the mountains, serpents that lurk in the dust, all these tremble in single awe of you. My eloquence to praising you according to your deserts; my wealth is not equal to providing the sacrificial victims I owe you; my voice has not the power to uttering all that I think of your majesty — no, not even if I had a thousand tongues in a thousand mouths and could speak forever. Nevertheless, poor as I am, I will do as much as I can in my devotion to you; I will keep your divine countenance always before my eyes and the secret knowledge of your divinity locked deep in my heart. I am Nature, the Universal Mother, Mistress of all the elements, primordial child of time, sovereign of all things spiritual, Queen of the Dead, Queen also of the immortals. The single manifestation of all Gods and Goddesses that are. My nod governs the shining heights of Heaven, the wholesome sea-breezes, the lamentable silences of the world below. Though I am worshipped in many aspects, known by countless names, and propitiated with all manner of different rites, yet the whole round earth venerates me: the primeval Phrygians call me Pessinuntica, Mother of the Gods; the Athenians, sprung from their own soil, call me Cecropian Artemis; for the islanders of Cyprus I am Paphian Aphrodite; for the archers of Crete I am Dictynna; for the trilingual Sicilians, Stygian Proserpine, and for the Eleusians their ancient mother of Corn. Some know me as Juno, some as Bellona of the Battles; others as Hecate, others again as Rhamnusia, both races of Aethiopians, whose lands the morning sun first shines upon, and the Egyptians who excel in ancient learning and worship me with ceremonies proper to my godhead, call me Isis. Listen attentively to my orders. The eternal laws of religion devote to my worship the day born from this night. Above all, have faith; do not think that my commands are hard to obey. Only remember, and keep these words of mine locked tight in your heart, that from now onwards you are dedicated to my service. It is only right that you should devote your whole life to the goddess who makes you a man again. Under my protection you will be happy, and when at the destined end of your life you descend to the land of Ghosts, there too in the subterrene hemisphere you shall have frequent occasion to adore me. From the Elysian Fields you will see me as Queen of the Profound Stygian Realm, shining through the darkness of Acheron with a light as kindly and as tender as I show you now. Further, if you are found to deserve my divine protection by careful obedience to the ordinances of my religion and by perfect chastity, you will become aware that I, and I alone, have power to prolong your life beyond the limits appointed by destiny. 6953 Notes: - This document is a close paraphrase of a genuinely famous ancient text: Lucius Apuleius, "The Golden Ass" (Metamorphoses), Book 11 — the invocation to Isis and her response speech to Lucius. This is one of the most widely quoted passages in Western esoteric literature, frequently reproduced in 20th-century occult and Wiccan writing. - Several proper names in this document (Pessinuntica, Rhamnusia, Dictynna, Cecropian Artemis) are genuine epithets/titles for ancient goddesses drawn directly from Apuleius's original text, not inventions specific to this document. Authorship note: This document does not fit the usual "Alex Sanders" vs. "diarist" framework at all — it is an adaptation of a published, centuries-old classical text by Apuleius, likely filtered through a specific 20th-century English translation. Authorship of the underlying wording is external to this archive entirely and needs separate consideration from the rest of the collection.
