[Boxed title:] Orrel Alexander Sanders
Alex had some sort of poorly-fixed hernia + he didn't eat properly, despite being a great cook himself + generous in feeding others.
Catherine Duvall – Dutch famous writer – and husband came over to be initiated by Alex, and they founded Dutch covens and Alex said they paid monthly tithes to him; probably a modest sum, but useful to him. Then in 1979 [struck out: the] Alex had a Dutch girl visit, and she was very disturbed, turning all of the coven out – she'd been sent away by Catherine Duvall + referred to Alex by her – and this girl (Ellie) was a mad wannabee, who eventually left, [boxed insertion: after being initiated] Alex then heard from Cath Duvall in Holland, with complaints that Alex had no right to initiate Ellie; despite Alex having initiated Duvall; and then Duvall cut off the money supply – Ellie came back to UK and joined Gardnerian group run by [struck out: ?] Jean + Zachary Cox, met guy called Lionel Hanby, then [inserted above: later] went into Northern Trad and called herself Freya Aswyn, lives in Scotland now and a group connected; called the Free Spirits are what Tanya Luhrman wrote about ("Persuasion of the Witches Craft"). T Luhrman knew Lionel Snell quite well.
[Beside "Zachary Cox", with an arrow:] (Editor of Aquarian Arrow)
Orders
① 1968 ⇒ The Greek-ish Chivalric order – Ronald has a letter related to the
② Ordine Della Nova (Alex's own)
③ Others – including Templar-like orders
Order of St John
[Page 6382B]
Alex's invention was Order of Deucalia.
Betty Britton was involved in Co-Masonry. [circled:] useful
[circled:] Maybe Derek was a Mason
[Arrow:] Alex may have followed Betty in
Colin Murray ← Alex put Tony in touch with
Timeslip ⇒ Alex described an excavation on the embankment which messed up archaeology – time and strata-wire. Tony was put in touch with Colin Murray, went to meetings; via a woman called (? Van Den Bosch) who was involved with numerous [demi?]-Masonic orders, who knew Alex well.
Maxine should know a lot more. Will she talk
[Page 6382C]
Other Hastings Contacts
[Above the heading:] do they recall Tony? / was he knee injury man?
? from Eastbourne, a young couple, at Alex's in 1985 (TL can't recall names)
This may be Ray + Linda from Eastbourne – pretty likely
Chivers, young female, florist, mother from Northolt, 1985.
Nigel [Baume?] + [Selding?] Bate (although they were, later, more to do with Maxine) but had some role in Alex's funeral
NEMA (Dave already in contact with her – will ask) – Tony doesn't recall, but NEMA visited the UK [illegible] – see interview
Tony Looker's Xmas card was no earlier than 1985 and is possibly their last communication ever
We need to get down that bloody well! Big gaps in correspondence files. Tony says Alex's postbag was quite regular and weighty on occasion – enough to justify a secretary (who was never taken on). PITY
From Address folders (Tony Looker)
[TL thinks that] Paul (Bexhill) was not an initiate, but a Bell regular whom Alex fancied a lot, and was a visitor to Alex but not a witch
Rosemary Pugh could be [maybe] sister of Diane, mentioned elsewhere in these notes – link up
John Hooper – photographer – Graham already in touch with
Address for Diccon in a Tibetan Centre in Dumfries – ? what date. [illegible] Typed list has 0171 London numbers – this can be dated (and [illegible] recently)
Also (Clarissa, 38 High St, old town, Hastings – [struck out: illegible] write to her too
(envelope) AJ Elliot Taylor – relative of Derek's [struck out: illegible] phone numbers – do address lookup on internet
AMADO – buggery – Peter Carroll – Initiates need 3 recruits to progress
[Page 6382D]
Alex had an address book FOR SURE
did Taylor burn it, or has Truelove got it ?
Who is Lizzie in the USA – Robert mention getting back some of Alex's stuff from her and why the personal visit – why not for them ?
Alex's own BoS would have been burned, but compare extant version handwritten in exercise books.
What happened to Alex's library (which was good + big) the mass of not all of Man Myth Magic + a lot of books
[Arrows from this line down to:] Check with – was this left to Derek? or were they sold when Alex + Derek went hardup? or has/did Truelove have em to sell ?
Contact 2nd hand / occult book dealer in Sussex
TL doesn't recall ex-libris plates etc, but AS may have signed a few
at Chantry Cottage [inserted: in a side room] Alex had Abramelin stuff – notes on and paper about and had copy of the Magus by Barrett – an old version [Now All Gone – no doubt ?]
A+M Records re Sanders LP – any other tapes
[Upside down at the foot of the page:] The Sorcerers
[Page 6382E]
Time Machine
Alan Barnes was into amateur electronics, inc a primitive PC (mid 80s) at Chantry Cottage + inc a small rubber ball wound with copper wire (see electronics books from 92-3 in the collection) – and someone did it with a football and blew their mind (an Alex joke).
Betty Britton had wrapped her bed with copper wire for the same reason
Alan didn't live at Chantry, but stored his electronics there, + lived in [inserted: in dining room] Main part of Bexhill + worked in an hotel
Outdoor rituals [boxed: LOW KEY]
location → not elaborate rituals, more 'visits'
they did some inc PUCK HILL, stopping at Selmeston, Barley Mow on the way
Derek, Alex, Tony L + one other. Alex went off on his own, then they rejoined. Alex had lots of herbs + fungi he'd collected, [boxed: Could this be the SKULLCAP ?] Most work was done indoors or in the garden of Chantry. On visits Alex often went into trance – speak to Mary Rann – once at Selmeston he pointed out his old house he'd rented, where a lot of his magic photos were taken (the ones in the books). Mary would bring 2-3 other own coven, inc "Barry + Mandy" – who Gerry of Gloster has mentioned, and Jim (Mary's partner). They would go caving (see the [illegible] + 'Cochrane link')
TO DO Monitor Alex's working every 5 years – sample as in medieval way and do ritual – Nr Wookey Hole – or Cheddar –
[boxed: AD-HOC COVEN]
Alex was not always a tough taskmaster, but Tony recalls him as being easy going to the point of being casual. Mary Rann was much more strict – and was almost always HP when she was around; but Alex + Mary got on well, inc sexually = affair. Rosemary + Diane (twins) were also around for several years (Tony can't recall the surnames); they looked like girls from a Martini Ad – like Lorraine Chase –
[Page 6382F]
Diccon Taylor, ? younger of 3 sons of Derek's would now be in his late 20s or early 30s
Alex was once concerned that Diccon as a young boy was way too young to be involved in the occult, but Derek was too keen to get him involved.
See letter folder – Diccon was later under a psychiatrist; and Derek has a prior history of psychological problems
CAN WE CONTACT DICCON?
Derek's former wife Anna is unlikely to want to talk
Little Betty ? might be willing to talk
John Maynall (or similar) + Pauline [or Mayall] from ? Hastings (who weren't keen on occult at all) (TL not sure of exact names)
(↑ had motorbike knee injury which Alex worked on)
[Circled:] Another Hastings couple ⇒ in CA Burland's Secrets of the Occult – in Glossy coffee table magic books like that p 10
? Clare [boxed: Woman's centre, blond man in front] of lower picture
3 + 4 o'clock in circle
[Diagram: Alex at the centre, with lines to names:]
[Circled:] Rusty Celia from Clapham
John Ryan
? Wendy
Claire Blake
Claire? } from Hastings
? Charles → Later went off to Buddhism
[Bracket at right:] some of these are on [illegible] which is [illegible] of record, which gives surnames.
RUSTY is in contact with the museum already – compare notes with him
[Page 6382G]
Alex/Derek always concentrated on "the work" almost with a missionary zeal, but it was never totally clear what "the work" was, for the group, or for the individual.
Derek thought Tony had somewhat "let the side down" when he withdrew from the scene; but was OK with him later – but didn't approve of TL being interested in Nordic Gods. Previously Alex had admitted he knew very little about the Norse pantheon – then AS channelled some and appreciated their raw power but Sanders, [UK] says was generally more Romano-British.
What is the message of NOVA – [inserted: need to] find a successful prediction ? the political letters
TL says Alex was certainly faking some of his mediumship, but at other times he was "genuinely in trance" – whatever that means, Tony says
The entities have virtually no interest in the health of the medium
Derek was concerned for his own health – they both let themselves go in the process of the trance workings. Lots of mediums seem to be sick – could this be causal? or just that they neglect themselves, by distraction, or is the channelling some kind of drain. Other mediums find it energising (battery polarity metaphor) Alex + Derek were perhaps sacrificing themselves to the work – a kind of Buddhist non-detachment.
DT and Alex were not high on analysis post hoc – Alex was mighty down on analysing immediately after a ritual, BUT.
[Page 6382H]
[Circled:] TL knows Phil Hine
[Arrow:] Land Registry search
At Clanricarde Gdns there was no 13/17 and ALSO NUMBER 40 which was demolished late 60s early 70s but Alex said the house/flat there had been in much use by Alex, including using it to give sanctuary to a couple of Greek dissident poets
[Arrow:] check with Gerry + [Vanessa?] if they ever went there
No Peter Carroll – Sanders meeting recalled by Tony, or mention of
[Arrow:] was at Uni with Giles Davis – he of Amado's group
(this based on TL talking to PC in around 1992) – TL think PC never had anything to do with the Craft ? [inserted: check]
Talk to Ian Read about how the [Tegmair?] connection came about also re Talking Stick approach which he rejected (and why = was too fluffy)
Steve Wilson was [inserted: or partner] with Caroline [Wise?] ; (who was big-build) and who is she?
[Page 6382I]
AMADO CROWLEY by Tony Looker 16/10/2002
Amado's student in 82 Giles Davis (Davies) who might run Diamond Press ? check.
he has ? [inserted: magically] threatened Ian Read (of Chaos International) also
Alex wasn't especially interested in rivalries but disliked having his credentials doubted, and had little opinion of Amado
Derek Taylor by Tony Looker 16/10/2002
could be very difficult – painted Temple in white gloss once all over – was at ? Lancing School/College – a public school was National Serviceman, then a job in the City – ? banking or insurance. Married + children, then ? Nervous breakdown just before meeting Alex (↘ ? to Anna or Amy) separated, lifestyle changed rapidly from "normal gent" to very Bohemian. Could be very intense + overwhelming user. (Tony L has Alex on tape in Trance) DT was very creative, but seems to have burned out fast. Compare to Dee + Kelley ? Alex was working with more people as well, not specifically Taylor – for example Alan Barnes, who has recently had a sex change operation, but (ALAN BARNES) whom Alex rated as able to hold an image in his mind for hours. and resembled a Camel in gait and appearance.
Drank sweet Spanish wine (cheap) copiously, could be really surly – and apparently moved to Ashford, Kent. [boxed: Railway worker]
John Ryan was the most interested in SciFi and Aliens (+ Hawkwind fan) and Derek picked it up from him. John had left Alex by 1984 [struck out: at the] Latest
[Page 6382J]
Tony Looker 16/10/2002.
Vivianne Crowley ("Theresa"?)
142 Pheasant Rise, London – TL met Nigel Pennick, Prudence Jones + Viv Crowley
HPS was Madge Worthington (Gardnerian wiccan) in Chiswick, London.
3 Chiswick Mall (?) address, right on river by District Line. HP was [Avalon?] – TL felt interrogated. Thelma – ? had been ripped off by Alex, allegedly; which was not so far from the truth, but Alex claimed the jewelry involved was a gift for healing ritual he'd done, when asked about it later. Class-war analysis → Alex was working class these coven were very well-to-do and in a nice area of London.
Tony Looker 16/10/2002
Sex + Drugs. Alex in 80s said he'd been using DoDo tablets [inserted: a lot] to reduce phlegm on chest, but there are 2 [illegible]; also cannabis frequently (although he banned it from Chantry Cottage); lots of wine + tobacco but no open drug use. He was quite strict on coven drug use, and did not promote their use. He was relaxed on talking about coven meetings but did not promote them as precursors to sexual activities – seems very MORAL; he was certainly no pimp – and there was much less sexual activity than is imagined, and this may be disappointing to some, but Alex had plenty of sex in his personal life
Violence? 16/10/2002
Tony never saw a violent side to Alex – never saw him strike anyone, including a child (son, [inserted: or daughter] Victor) – he only ever gestured with a stick – the sight being enough. He got angry, but not violent. [Although this is alleged in the divorce papers from Maxine] This maybe some legal tactic not based on truth
[Page 6382K]
Alex and Publicity Tony Looker 16/10/2002
he tried + failed to be his own agent; which is a mistake for anyone – he needed a professional agent. He could get publicity, but not deal with it all when it arrived. Derek Taylor in latter years was [struck out: not] a great help – more of an [inserted: average] secretary than a PR man. Tony lent them some money for publicity + funding, + material for robes etc for a photoshoot. A nice series appeared, and bits of material. And nothing more.... it just petered out, due to Derek's mishandling and or inertia of the process. The next year Alex was lecturing in London on the tarot regularly – Alex had an offer of a flat in Marylebone to lecture in (discreetly, due to posh area) from a model or a glam actress, called (?) Lizette or similar. 2 lectures were held there, but it sounds like a bit of an S+M dungeon place, alleged to have held Mick Jagger (allegedly). The next venue was uncertain (everyone met at the Museum Tavern beforehand), since DeTaylor was not discreet enough when leaving Lizette's one time and said "We're with the King of the Witches" [inserted: or WITCH] and they had to cancel the arrangements after that. Sounds like Lizette was an expensive specialised prostitute
Drinking + Smoking
Alex was virtually alcoholic in the 80s + smoked loads of Park Drive cigs even in his worst time of penury there was money for this aspect
Alex once said to Mary R what wonderful breasts she had, and maybe he kiss them – she said yes, being charmed
Alex was maybe 5'8" and thin, so wasn't physically intimidating
Aura? – First impression of Alex was surprising – he was unexpectedly quiet, polite, small – almost humble, not at all forbidding, warm, easygoing and put you at ease in seconds, and they talked for several hours, and AS was an excellent listener and communicator, great empathy and [boxed: [illegible]] to talk to people, on very personal and sexual matters – he was also very worldly, with no sexual hangups whatsoever. A great teacher and a good mentor.
[Page 6382L]
AS was not a paedophile
Tony first contacted Alex by letter – TL was at a friend's house and read about Alex in the Observer magazine (1968 ish) and clicked on the imagery, but was only about 11 at the time. Later TL found Alternative London, and Sanders' phone number was in there, so Tony phoned him (≈ [inserted: late] 1977) – but got [struck out: Maxine's?] [inserted above: an answerphone?] and went to Clanricarde Gdns for an open evening in the Basement Flat. David Goddard was there (he is now a consultant at Mind Body Spirit + a Healer + Angel channeller) with Murray Langham, a Kiwi, who was Maxine's HP for a while until Alex poached him.
TL went to lecture for 6 months + applied to be a student, and Maxine turned him down several times, + put him on to Alex instead; giving the address, Alex replied, they spoke on phone and TL went through system (Alex was running both single degree and 3° system all at once) and was initiated at Autumn Equinox – very much a culmination/ [inserted: almost a] confirmation of what was already learned + worked through, inc some very shamanic experiences + workings.
2° is hazy, if not absent
3° initiation with Alex were free + loose, with a couple there would be an exit by the coven + Alex, for privacy. Graham Johnson (Australian), John Ryan, Alex + Derek were there for Tony's 3° – discussed "the opening" from Subud. [boxed: But Alexandrian stuff now is more dogmatic] and it happened to Tony – a dislocation of self – bilocation of the self – in Temple and on a hillside simultaneously. [boxed: Alex used to innovate + experiment a lot]
Books of Shadow
Alex wrote one as an afterthought, but had an old ledger-like ancient book which was "shadow" for him, handwritten; but had a lot of typed stuff – Book of Cords, Book of [Baler?] + [Spicer?] (Tony has copies) and the Pauline Art (see red folder in Library – Voice of the Angels etc) also The 4 Rivers of Magic, Maxine had a lot of Franz Bardon so did Alex, he was very taken with Bardon
Notes:
- The handwriting is the note-taker's, not Alex's. The pages record what Tony Looker ("TL") said in an interview. Pages 6382I to 6382K are dated 16/10/2002 and name Tony Looker as the source.
- Abbreviations on the pages: TL = Tony Looker; AS = Alex Sanders; DT = Derek Taylor; PC = Peter Carroll; HP = High Priest; HPS = High Priestess; BoS = Book of Shadows.
- Each page is marked 6382A to 6382L in the top right corner.
- Clanricarde Gardens (6382H and 6382L) is the address of Alex's London temple.
Authorship note:
The pages are unsigned. The writer is not named. They read as research notes made while interviewing Tony Looker, with the writer's own queries and to-do items mixed in (for example "CAN WE CONTACT DICCON?" and "compare notes with him"). Mentions of "the museum" and of people such as Dave and Graham suggest the writer was working on the archive, but this is inferred, not stated.
